A PowerBloc® for a House in Big Sur
The PowerBloc is the first practical utility replacement. PowerBloc makes utility power optional.
All of our customers use this freedom in many different ways. They use the PowerBloc to avoid delays of costly utility upgrades, protect from outages, or go off-grid. But these are only some of the reasons.
One of our customers is renovating an iconic home in Big Sur. Power goes out frequently on this rugged and scenic coast south of Monterey, California. But our customer’s primary concern is to have power during wildfire season.
The customer’s house in Big Sur. The retaining wall will hold vertical solar panels, which will help with solar production in the winter. The photo shows a test of the panel attachment.
The PowerBloc at this house provides power to the home’s wildfire suppression system that draws water from 18,000-gallon water tanks buried below the property.
Wildfires in Big Sur are most common in the fall when the sun becomes scarce. The customer also wanted to maximize the use of solar energy year-round. Both requirements are meant to design a solar array that produces as much solar energy in the fall and in winter as possible. The solution the site allowed was a flat array on the garage and a vertical array on the property’s retaining wall.
PowerBloc also solved this property’s physical challenges elegantly. The site sits at the end of a narrow ridge that abruptly drops hundreds of feet to the ocean. Space is very limited. The PowerBloc’s high-voltage DC energy bus and the modularity allowed YouSolar to split the PowerBloc into two locations and create shorter custom cabinets to fit the PowerBloc beautifully on the site.
The example of the customer in Big Sur shows how PowerBloc can meet even the most complex requirements efficiently and elegantly.
